CHAPTER ELEVEN

CALLUM

Pulling up in front of a little hole in the wall, I turn off my car and snatch my phone off the dash mount. Peeking out the window, guilt mingles with worry in my veins. This is where Siobhan’s phone is, so she must be here, too. How long had it been since I last saw her?

At least ten days. Siobhan had ignored me for ten days, and I don’t know why. Climbing out of my car, I look around for her obnoxious, red luxury vehicle, but can’t see it. Biting back a sigh, I lick my teeth in irritation before heading up onto the sidewalk. Ducking into the tiny restaurant, I spot Siobhan immediately, sitting with some dude, but that’s not what stops me.

She’s covering her arms and neck. Her hair is oily and unkempt. Her face is sunken, and there are deep, dark bags around her eyes. Weaving around tables, my heart aches fiercer with each step, and Siobhan hunches sharply over her placemat.

“Siobhan?” Her head bops weakly before she looks at me through glazed, red-rimmed eyes, and I crouch down to smile sadly. “Hey, baby. What happened, huh?”

“Nothing,” She rasps a whisper, and my lips twitch when she turns away from me to stare at the tabletop. “Nothing happened that I didn’t expect. I just . . . didn’t know it’d affect me so bad. I’m fine.”

“You look like shit, baby. That’s not nothin’. Who’s this guy, hmm?” She shrugs at my question, sinking into her seat, folding in on herself. I glance over at the guy, but it’s obvious he’s here on business and nothing more. Only question is . . . what’s that business about? He rolls his jaw, jerking his head to the side to rub his neck uncomfortably. My mouth dries, and blood drums loudly in my ears as I reach to finger her thick turtleneck.

Siobhan slaps my hand away sharply, and I grab her wrist instinctively to stare at the scabs on her palm. Holding my breath, I groan softly when she hiccups dangerously. “Did something happen to you at home, Siobhan?”

“I don’t wanna talk about it.” Turning her face away from me, Siobhan’s face pales with shame. Casting the man a curious look, I gesture him with a tilt of my head, and he taps the tabletop with his fingertips before standing up.

“I’ll be right back, baby. Don’t go anywhere,” Releasing her hand, I keep one eye on her as we shuffle away. The irrational fear that she’d disappear crawls up my spine. “Who’re you, and what happened to Siobhan that scared her so bad?”

“Thomas. I’ve been assigned to her for the time being. Her father knows about you, Callum MacDougall,” I stiffen at that, and Thomas rubs his chin thoughtfully. “I know about you, what your grandfather did to his sister. But I don’t think anyone else does. Colin hasn’t told anyone. He just beat her around a little over a week ago, and she’s been like this ever since.
